about

April 2021

Impossible is the third instalment of Language of Flowers, a series of compositions which documents, explores, and celebrates the year I met my dear wife YuMee.

Impossible was written rather quickly one spring day in 2008. I remember sunlight flooding into the living room as I worked out the chord progression. I wrote the words late that night.

It explores lucid dreams, the afterlife, reincarnation, butterflies, love, and colour. I reworked it several times; there exists a version sung by Isla Craig with an ethereal backing track of layered omnichord. This version is perhaps the 5th.

Although the bulk of Language of Flowers was written in one round, this older tune fits with the others so nicely that I thought it should be included.

Enjoy!

lyrics

wake up inside a dream
may seem
impossible
hues
and clues
are audible and flow so free

kiss me and go to sleep
wake deep
in the amazon
your eyes
my skies
fly until the dawn lights up the sea

ashes to ashes we’re all only flashes of love
reeling through universe
extraordinary

true but unseen there’s
enchantment inside a dream
may seem
so paradoxical
remain
again
in our tropical dream paradise

green gold & blue specks of me flecks of you butterfly
and when we fade away
spread our wings and then
wait to be born on a lucky cloud someday

green golden blue specks of me flecks of you butterfly
while the earthworms work
shed our skins again
wait to be born on a lucky cloud and rain
