about

A Recipe is part of my collection called β€œLanguage of Flowers”

These songs document the beginnings of my relationship with my dear wife YuMee. This song recalls our first outing, a group dinner at a local Ethiopian restaurant. There were lovely strong flavours and colours, words like β€œsynaesthesia”. Later I had a brisk and joyful walk home through the wintry/spring night.

I was initially inspired by a compilation of Brazilian folk music I borrowed from my pal Ben. There was a long and grooving Marimba tune on there that really stuck to my ribs. From there the hocket between the Contra-Alto Clarinet and the bass was pretty organic. The flute & clarinet are somewhat influenced by phrasing you might find in traditional Ethiopian music.

Standing back I can see that there is a fine blend of flavours in the musical stew. In the lyrics I attempted to include colours and scents (and colours that are also scents), for a floral feast for your ears. There is a power in visualisation, scent memory, melody, and the intention we bring to each moment.

lyrics

A RECIPE

it’s clear to me
love is like a recipe
what we put in
know it will come out again

cinnamon, breathe it in, let the melody begin
add a little, add a little, add a little bit of love
bottle green river scene what a glorious dream
with a little, with a little, with a little bit of love

I close
my eyes
and I
can see you shine
shine

it’s clear to me
love is like a melody
when you & me
are together I can see

we are all in a song how it carries us along
and a little, and a little, and a little bit of love
lilly white, star so bright, how you light up the night
with a little, with a little, with a little bit of love

I close
my eyes
and I
can see you shine
shine
