about

Dragonflies

Lepidoptera was a favourite pastime of one of my favourite authors, Vladimir Nabokov. Arriving in America in 1940, he might have observed the Xerces Blue, a butterfly last seen in 1941. It is believed to be the first American species of butterfly to have gone extinct, due to loss of habitat.

Nymphalis Antiopa is a thriving species of butterfly, called Mourning Cloak in America, and Camberwell Beauty in England. They are known to completely defoliate ornamental trees, and thrive in firebreaks. I remember seeing them a lot in Alberta growing up.

My favourite line in the song is β€œDream through the winter, soar through the summer”. Amazingly, I found this line on the wikipedia page for Butterfly. It’s since been edited away, which is perfect for a song about ephemerality.

Will we evolve like a butterfly, and transform into something unimaginably amazing, or will we transform our habitat into an inhospitable mess, triggering our own extinction? Our decisions will multiply and echo in unimaginable ways.

Compound eyes and four wings
Eyespots and scales
Envision all the octaves
Kaliedoscope perfection

Lepidoptera today
Ain't what it used to be
Xerces blue, xerces blue
Gone today, gone tomorrow
