about

Impossible was written on the summer solstice of 2008, shortly before I left for Tuva. I remember the night so clearly, still bright at 10pm, and a clear shower of rain while the sun shone down.

I was inspired by a quote from Arthur C. Clarke β€œThe only way of discovering the limits of the possible is to venture a little way past them into the impossible”

My wife Yumee & I had been to the Amazon the year before; I was interested in synaesthesia, homophones, reincarnation, composting, and the environment; all of which is quite obvious from the lyrics. (The 2021 version has slightly different lyrics)

I originally set the melody to an African funerary drum pattern and added horns, but that version never quite landed. I had a couple of extra hours in the studio and recorded a backing track with Omnichord to Isla’s fantastic vocal. I ended up far preferring this version over the band track.

Now that the updated version is out in the world it seems like a nice moment to release this early version. Instead of a remix it’s a dream-mix.

I do hope you enjoy this little tune, and it brings a bit of colour to your dreams.

lyrics

Wake up inside a dream
Lucid, impossible
Shape in form
Your imagination flows free

Kiss me and go to sleep
Rain on the amazon
Blue is green
Our earthly paradise

Ashes to ashes we’re all only dust after all
Stars first born
Reeling through universe extraordinary

Opening minds there’s enchantment inside a dream
Awake paradoxical
Wait, sustain
Kiss the earth and skies for evermore

Green gold & blue specks of me flecks of you butterfly
Bloom in spring
While the earthworms work cosmic dna
Waits to be born on a lucky cloud someday

Green gold & blue specks of me flecks of you butterfly
Bloom in spring
While the earthworms work, we shed our skins again
Wait to be born on a lucky cloud and rain
